From a series of paintings celebrating Nantucket's history, ACK 1795 is one of my glass paintings. Building upon a dimensional gesso that mimics the nautical charts of the islands, I layer on the famous Nantucket Red with a warm golden 1795, and then mindfully add a single layer of glass spheres that forms the shape of this storied island. As the viewer moves or the light changes, the shimmer of the island's shape appears and disappears. Looks great as a single piece of artwork or with one or more of the other ACK Year Paintings.
1795 was the year that the island's main town was renamed to Nantucket, the native inhabitants' name for the island.
